Japanese Literature is one of the most well read literatures at the moment. Starting from Haruki Murakami , the books focus on a plethora of themes which range from mystery to mundanity . Toshikazu Kawaguchi's"Before the Coffee Gets Cold" , deals with temporality on a wide scale . Temporality refers to the very notion of time, and how it functions . We can't reverse, back time in real life, as it is quite practically impossible.  However, characters in the book go back into the past and try to correct their past mistakes , or losses . If one could use a time machine to travel back to happier days , what would one do? A female characters who is significant is Kei Tokita, who travels in the future to meet her husband.  Funiculi Funicula is the cafe where there us a time travelling chair . If you let your coffee get cold , you turn into a ghost . The ghost visiting her husband represents material attachments. We cannot afford to loose certain special relationships in life, even beyond life.

The relationship dynamic between Fumiko Kiyokawa and Goro Katada is somewhat a picture of relationships in modern days . A communication gap can lead to things getting messed up in a relationship in  modern times . The book also portrays how we can't undo certain events in the past, and what are the consequences if we try to meddle with such events . Time and temporal space and human thought processes are explored in depth , which is seldom done. Temporal space is a plot device, which takes the central stage in the very narrative.
