We all use social media every day. Thousands of opinions float by and we either relate to it or don't. This is the true nature of the Internet. The Internet was discovered to help people connect and share their ideas. This should've resulted in different opinions and ideas taking over the space right? However, I will never not be confused about how Social media eventually became a hub of extremist views. Instagram, for instance, promotes an idea which resonates with most of its audience.
The algorithm is set. It is most likely to suggest the content consumed by most of the users. The more extreme the idea — the further from the norm and consensus — the more likely it is to strike a chord (either extremely positively, or negatively) with an extreme minority, which will feel validated or shocked into sharing it further.
Even if the idea is to spread hate, Instagram is likely to push it further and gain attention. An extreme idea which is continuously shared will eventually be interpreted as an ordinary idea. This is also called the false consensus effect. The extremist views become mainstream, and the creators can fabricate an illusion that a large chunk of the population shares their own beliefs.
Now, observe how the majority of the consumers of this content will be the negative and hating community and the minority will be the opposing community. (The Bandwagon of Hating or Liking) There is no middle. Instagram will force you (A passive audience) to either completely believe in that ideology or solely deny it. Please think about a situation yourself, before exposing yourself to these extremist views.
