Pehchaan The Street School (Trust) is a nine-year-old organisation working across various slum areas in Delhi NCR. The primary objective of the organisation is to provide free education to underprivileged children.
“Pehchaan” – means Identity! For over nine years now, our group of volunteers has been trying to reach out to the neglected children of society & help make their Identity. From elementary education to vocational studies, we have emphasised the value of education as a fundamental right. Our motive is to make Education accessible to every child with a desire to learn.
The institutionalisation and commodification of education across our country have severely restricted the ability of the underprivileged to access means of vocational as well as academic studies, and that’s the barrier that we aim to break with our street school.
We, at Pehchaan the street school, have always tried to go beyond conventional studies. We have always believed that Life skills are a very crucial component of education because they equip individuals with the necessary tools to navigate various challenges and succeed in different aspects of life. At Pehchaan the street school, we give great importance to teaching life skills, as it particularly aids the student's overall, holistic development and encourages the students to follow their interests and hobbies, to exercise their choice fully.
At Pehchaan the street school, several life skills are taught either through vocational training or through certain activities that just provide the students with all the fun and enjoyment they need, alongside Education. Some of the life skills being taught at Pehchaan the Street School are listed below as follows:
1. BUILDING RESILIENCE AND CONFIDENCE: One of the biggest life skills that Pehchaan the street school focuses on, is building confidence amongst the students. We truly believe in this quote that never dulls your shine for somebody else, and that is exactly what we intend to teach our pupils at Pehchaan the street school. That is why life skills education at Pehchaan the Street School pays close attention to the importance of self-belief and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. It tries to make its students learn to overcome challenges confidently and develop a positive mindset towards life.
2. BUILDING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Another important life skill that Pehchaan the street school, often emphasises is related to developing communication and interpersonal skills. As it is often said, if you just communicate, you just get by and that is exactly what we intend on imparting to our dear children. Students at Pehchaan the Street School take part in various activities like active learning that help them to effectively build their communication skills. Apart from that, the children at Pehchaan the street school always have a chance to effectively build their communication skills as every day they get to interact with volunteers and teachers from diverse sectors of life, and that helps them a lot to express themselves more clearly and build their identity.
3. CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING: As the world becomes more advanced, students have become more and more dependent on Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT and Google for solutions to any problem. This has left them mentally handicapped. To tackle this, Pehchaan-The Street School is set to focus on critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in its students. The life skills education programme at Pehchaan the street school encourages students to think independently. We, at Pehchaan the Street School, truly believe that Critical thinking and reasoning are the keys to creativity, and we want our students to to replace an empty mind with an open one.
Thus, at Pehchaan the street school, great emphasis is given to the importance of life skills. We, at Pehchaan the street school, truly believe that "Education is not just about feeding the brain. It's about nurturing the whole being - the heart and the hands as well as the mind." And we are truly working incessantly to make this happen.
